Working as a marketer/copywriter and then healthcare co-founder, I’ve written a lot in the last several years. But most of that writing has been for client projects or business purposes. I’m proud of that work. It produced results and showcased my clients’ amazing work. But I’ve missed having a place to share about ideas or questions for their own sake.
That’s what this site is for. I plan to explore a range of topics such as artistry, technology, and the craft of being human. To share what I’m learning in the hope others may find it useful. And to pass on other writing/work I find interesting. Check out the about page for a bit more.
And if you’re wondering:
What’s with all the birds?
The short answer is, “Why not?” They’re fun. :)
And Audubon’s bird illustrations are beautiful too.
The longer answer goes back several years. My office at the time looked out at a big oak tree. And one spring I noticed there were a whole bunch of tiny birds flying around I hadn’t noticed before. What were they, I wondered? (Migrating warblers as it turned out.)
My mom had always logged the birds we saw when I was growing up in Kenya (using an actual bird book). But that was in Kenya. And Kenya, as I’m sure you know, has way more interesting birds.
But seeing these little warblers got me curious. I started pulling up Merlin1 on my phone more often while out walking. And I began actively looking for birds in my area and trying to figure out what they were. Turns out, there are a lot of cool birds in Chicago too (especially in spring and fall during migration).
It’s fun watching them. They help me pay closer attention to the world. And my youngest daughter has even joined me in it.
As I once wrote, life happens in moments like these.
Thanks for being here. Talk soon.

Merlin may be one of the most amazing apps ever created. You can record the sounds of the birds you’re hearing and it’ll tell you what they are. Or there’s a guided ID tool where you note the color, size, and where the bird is to get the most likely options for what you’re looking at. ↩︎
